Dreams vs. Reality

As the lights dim down,

I shut my eyes with a fulfilling ease,

Each inhale causing my chest to expand further and further out,

Every exhale a sigh breaches from the crevices of my nose.

The muscles beneath my flesh soften with time,

Working less and less to remain efficient,

As I lay still in a curled up ball,

The way my mother used to hold me so I would never fall.

My thoughts begin to wander,

Some about my life beyond the shadow of my parents,

The day I seek transformation into adulthood.

But suddenly my mind goes blank.

Am I sleeping or could I still be awake?

The darkness creeps in,

And the feelings from head to toe are no more.

The five senses are gone, no longer apparent.

And all I'm left with is a blank canvas,

Waiting for my mind to come up with a creative plot,

Some place for me to live; a life away from home.

But soon I don't have to wait any more.

I can open my eyes,

To see this new world in front of me,

One with everything I could ever want.

There's a port with ships, yachts, and speed boats.

And the waves are gallantly strolling in with the tide

Causing the boats to sway back and forth,

Creating the illusion that the boats will sway away,

But instead they stay.

My worries fade away,

As I'm no longer weighed down by urgent deadlines,

And important decisions to be made.

I'm finally living my life the way that I want to.

But suddenly an echo approaches.

The beeping in the background thunders with every second

Seeming closer and closer,

Closer and closer.

The image begins to fade

And the numbness in my hands descend.

With a slight turn to the right, a shining bright light comes near

Forcing me to expose my tired eyes.

Putting an end to my trip,

And bringing me back to reality.
