Drivers Seat

No one is coming to rescue us.

It’s a hard truth to trust.

Surely there must be a hero?

But there is none.

It is only us versus them.

And they will not let us go.

A terrifying truth.

Nevertheless, there I sit in the passenger seat,

Humming.

And there you sit in the driver’s seat,

In control.

It is you who commands this car.

A metallic, impenetrable fortress

Traveling only on four wheels and an exhausted motor.

It is you who demands it

To charge up the incline and race through the downslope,

To twist it’s metal frame in order to squeeze through the curves and contortions in the road,

To run and run, faster than any human, any being, could ever imagine.

You inspire me.

It is you who orders it to stop.

No more gas. No more running.

Time to go home.

But the instant the pad of your heal

Touches the earth,

You are frozen in place,

The world races towards you at full force-

A truck barreling down the mountainside,

The breaks are broken

And there you stand,

In its way,

Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide

No hero to stop it.

We must face them head on.

Together,

We may step into truth.

We are the only ones

who can defeat them.

Though we each have our own,

You will take the ones from the left,

And I’ll guard the right.

We have no chance of defeating them all tonight.

But I will protect you.
And you me.

For now, we will do what we can.

It is,

Exhausting.

So we live for those moments,

That brief hour, or so,

When the wind is drowning out our voices,

When we are blinded by wild wisps of hair,

And your foot is pressed against the pedal,

Racing.

When nothing,

Not a single demon

Can keep up.
