Drowning
Because I love you you said
looking through my phone to see if any possible suitors
were threatening your property
Because I love you you said
telling me I couldn't go out with my friends dressed like that
because I might get hit on
and you only want the best for me
Because I love you you said
grabbing my wrist as I try to go to a study session
saying you don't trust my friend of years to keep his hands off
Because I love you you said
as you gripped my waist too tight in the store
when I smiled at the cashier
Because I love you you said
as bruises both emotional and physical formed
my friends hating me as I fell farther and farther away
as I kept being dragged towards you
telling me that if I loved you too
I would do what you asked.
But because I've been made to believe I love you
I'm drowning and I would rather die
than betray your unfailing fidelity
so I swallow the water obediently
telling myself that I'm doing this
Because I love you
and because if I go
I don't know if anyone else will love me too
