Dry Roots
"Dream Big! Dream Big!" run the voices in my head
A demand that's been growing for years on end
Beckoned by family, friends, teachers, and our culture
I must aim high, lest I end up a failure
Yet I am destined for greatness in a time of limits
Is this talk of bountiful success just a bunch of gimmicks?
I'd been promised a life of more than my parents
But the way the wind blows, I'm pushed inanother direction
Instead of setting my feet on the Yello Brick Road
This dream becomes a fantasy, a painted reality that slowly corrodes
Until I am left struggling in an ocean of truth
It weighs me down, this mountain of proof
It threatens every sinle thing I have been taught
Waving a finger in my face, "I Think Not!"
To the idea that I can be anything, no matter how large
For reality acts as city lights, shattering views of the stars
The truth rests that the water is scarce
Even though we all wish for fruit to bear
What had been gauranteed is in short supply
Count your dreams, for your soil will be dry!
It is not what we's been promised, this reality we face
It instilles in me fear for my future state
For I cannot get by on dreams alone
They won't feed my foliage and help me grow!
"Dream Big! Dream Big!" it echos in my head
As I lay here a seed, under a dirt bed
But how can I break through this mountain of truth
When my ration of water barely reaches my roots?
