duke

a woman is lying in the grass
outside the hospital, legs up
a little blond girl balanced on her feet
as she shouts to touch the sky

as they laugh and topple to the ground
an ambulance is across the green
unloading its precious cargo
wrapped in bandages and metal

on that day it somehow seems
the sun is brighter than it should be.
