Dumb Blonde

I open my laptop case And there it is Staring at me, Covering the chair at my desk, The back of my shirt, Lying coiled on my carpet Waiting to scare me. When I put on a jacket A strand on my sleeve reminds me My life expectancy is higher Because of my hair. My parents maybe got their jobs Because of their skin. I look like the love interest in movies Because of my hair. Maybe had more opportunities in school Because of my skin. And in this backwards world I'm living in Women starve themselves Dye themselves And have themselves cut up To look like me. And I have to live knowing What it means to be a dumb blonde. Stupid, stupid blonde.

This poem was inspired by various high school and college classes that have discussed how racism is alive and well in the U.S.
