The Dusty Road
I’ve looked straight ahead for my entire life.
All I see is deterioration.
It hangs over my head like dead flowers hang over a vase.
It’s inevitable.
Nothing can stay forever;
it just doesn’t work that way.
No matter how much the shady road says,
no matter what the rich trees tell me.
No one can hold my soft hand day after day,
no one can look in my sky blue eyes to tell me it’s alright
and no one can live to see all the wonders in the world.
I peel away my life like how wood rips out of the floor after it gets too old.
Dust comes into my eyes and I can’t see what I miss out on,
I’m so focused on finding my path;
what direction to follow.
If I get far from the gravel beneath my weary feet,
and I can feel flowing grass swishing on my hard worked calves,
I know that I have become lost.
I’ve always found my way back though,
the dust has never blinded me that badly,
my eyes see fine,
but it’s my mind that controls my eyes to go onward;
to focus on myself.
It corrupts my nerves as I start to wither away,
I look at my body and only see my hands shaking,
my scarred legs and bruised feet,
the ribs that pop out of my skin;
all I see is deterioration.
I look straight ahead in the dusty wind realizing I prevented getting a soft hand,
a caring word,
or any wonders.
Because I was too focused on myself,
I cannot stay forever.
