Echoes From the Past
You’re sitting there all alone,
When it suddenly hits you.
Although it was subtle it felt like a stone,
A piece of coal that was somehow multicolored in hue.
Every emotion all mixed into one,
Happiness, depression, love, and anger.
Each on its own was a battle you’ve won,
But all at once seems to have a feel of danger.
Yet, somehow you’re not frozen with fear,
Instead this presence leaves you feeling empowered.
You’ve conquered one, or two every day of the year,
And you’ve not yet bowed before them, or cowered.
Then you realize that this isn’t a new attack,
But memories of assaults you’ve mastered.
These supposedly forgotten inner wars begin to stack,
And formed a tower as if together they were plastered.
But still you refuse to back down,
So you start to gain a good hold.
The tower falls, but creates a town,
However, before you can parry, the town starts to fold.
A new feeling overtakes you,
Confusion has started to show.
You’re wondering why the town began to undo,
When all of a sudden you hear a crow.
A black bird flies overhead,
A new memory has surfaced, one of death.
This was a reminiscence that you hoped was dead,
Just like the one you loved, who drew their last breath.
Taken by surprise you almost fall to your knees,
With difficulty you start to recover.
Looking around, you’re in a cemetery with trees,
You see an elderly man weeping for his lover.
In a blink of the eye there is nobody there,
And now both gravestones are marked.
Again you have the feeling that life isn’t fair,
That from birth someone is constantly sharked.
A lightning bolt cracks across the sky,
And reality starts to sink back in.
You find yourself staring the past in the eye,
And decide that this fight you will win.
You allow yourself to be enveloped,
All of the memories descend on you in a shroud.
In the shroud your maturity starts to be developed,
So you start to emerge out of the cloud.
In the end you settle for a tie,
You rise above your memories, but they did last.
These bits of your history won’t die,
They remain your echoes from the past.
