Ed

Dear Ed,

You had me fooled,

For what I thought was friendship became a force of rule

You never deserved my effort or time,

Let along the simplest rhyme

For what you’ve done was overly cruel

I befriended you in hopes of pursuing control

For my life was a series of chaotic events

I needed a means to feel less afraid

And you showed me that food was an object of shame

I found you appealing because I found myself not

Quickly, I hoped, my body would rot

As I starved myself thinking this was the only way

Oh Ed, my Eating Disorder, how you led me astray

But alas, I persisted, eventually to see

How wonderful the world around me could be

Through recovery, I endured, dismantling your ways

Your rules, your tactics, your irrational disarray

And today, I stand radiant through the part you no longer play

In the life I had always wanted, in the place I will stay

Free from restriction, pursuant of health

Ed, you were no good for me,

So for you, nothing else.
