Education In One Syllable
Each year we build our education
Requirements flooding through our schedule
Often questioning where we’ll use the information
Taught how to spell ‘uncomfortable’
And how to use my five refusal skills
None of which he would ever listen to
We were taught how to use the periodic table
But never how to use Self-Forgiveness
We were taught how to take care of our bodies
But never how to reassemble once it has been destroyed
We were taught the meaning of the word ‘Encumber’
But never the idea that we may become its exact definition
We were taught so many things
But despite what they may say
You won’t carry these things with you
You’ll have to learn most on your own
They never taught us that life is unfair
So stop playing by the rules
Never taught us that if you’re walking home from a bar,
Always have your phone and weapon ready
Never taught us that death is something you have to accept
Because you might not notice but everyone around you is dying
Never taught us that every syllable you may roll off your tongue
Will be chopped down into small, bite sized pieces
So that when they swallow you whole you won’t scratch at their throat
They taught us that people will ask how you’re doing
Only willing to hear that you are fine
I learned that you are supposed to be fine
I learned that unless you are screaming
No one will listen to you
Some days you’ll have to calculate the circumference of your heart
Search for the element of your wisdom
You’ll learn that your history will repeat itself
No matter how many times you may learn it
Learn that every ounce of you
Can be simplified
Can be Categorized
Can become
One
Single
Insignificant
Syllable
But I suppose that’s why they taught us how to end a sentence
