Empty Words
Empty Words
Love is a powerful word.
You say those three words regularly now,
But where were they when I was growing up?
Were you thinking those words when you tried to take me
From the first person I’d ever known?
When you held my hand and held me tight, or at times I needed it most?
Where were you when I felt the world was against me
While you stood silent and watched?
Did you mean what little words you said when
You packed pictures and memories and pushed them aside,
Leaving me in the past without even asking if I was alright?
When you sold the only thing that tied us together without warning,
A place where we were happy,
And shipped yourself one-thousand-four-hundred-forty-four miles from me,
the one you say you love, like it was fine?
When you speak those words through the phone--like the taste of
Tarnished metal in my mouth,
For if what you say is true, why would you leave?
Love is a powerful word--A useless, meaningless, empty word.
