Enough Already

Four years of English

Three years of mathematics

Three years of foreign language

Two years of science

When will I use this?

The chemistry student asks

Uh… Chemistry is all over; I like fire.

The Chemistry teacher says

When will I use this?

The French student asks

Je ne comprend pas

The French teacher says

But we live in a global economy

When will I use this?

The algebra student asks

It teaches you logic; solve the equation

The algebra teacher says

When will I use this?

The English student asks.

Never have I ever gotten an answer.

We take half a year of writing

And three and a half years of literature

Literature is culture

Literature is status

Literature is important

Literature is important but so are other things

Math is important

Foreign language is important

Science is important

So please,

Before you start complaining

About why you have to take so many years of math

So many years of science

Before you start complaining

About how math and science are valued over arts

Before you start complaining

About how unfair high school is

Remember this

Remember that I have to take

Three and a half years of literature

I have to analyze countless books

I have to write countless papers

On things I don’t have a chance in hell of understanding

At least science is considered dorky

At least the hatred of math is considered normal

Please, stop complaining
