Escape

Words They have the power to transport us To move us To take us away Which is what I needed An escape For the longest time I was in a place with no brightness, no light No happiness, no words And yet, I was still alive I would sit at my desk for hours The pages in front of me, blank Oddly naked in the absence of words In the presence of my pain Until something changed I learned that there was something I could do To get myself to the light that was beyond my reach The happiness that seemed impossible It happened a few years ago When my English teacher persuaded me to venture out of my comfort zone And encouraged me to start writing again With a promise of not being able to fail And so I finally managed To put my pencil to the blank pages in front of me And slowly, words filled the pages Beautiful, inspiring words that took me to happier times Happier places Beautiful and heartbreaking words That expressed my deepest and darkest fears The emotions that I hid from everyone Even myself And as I began to write The light that was once out of reach Began to grow bigger Began to surround me And heal me with its light With the escape that those words provided me I had found a hidden strength within me Strength to move on To persevere To get past the hard times And be able to reach the good times That were sure to come Although that one piece of paper Used to be blank, It is now filled with words Countless words Taking me away To different places Different times Giving me a love of words And an escape
