Escaping Avarice

For humans, it all starts off at a young age.

We’re barely a toddler yet we’re already astray.

You have to teach a baby to share, not to take.

From kindness, we're already led away.

As we grow older, it only gets worse.

Wanting a cat, dog, pony, frog,

Enough!

Our greed is a curse.

The voice of avarice envelops our brains,

twisting our thoughts, shutting off the good.

All that matters is what we have,

where is the emotion and the heart?

The darkness of greed is our shadow,

Trailing us around wherever we go.

Clinging on to our every thoughts,

Coating us in its inky wrath.

It doesn’t get better as we grow older,

we still claw at what we can't have.

We are devoured by our desires,

we forget to think about what life is about.

What ever happened to becoming great?

What ever happened to sharing with others?

What ever happened to the things that matter?

What ever happened to a caring soul?

There is still a bright glimmer of hope,

like a ray of sunshine escaping the storm.

We can learn to make things right,

we can change as a nation.

We must cast aside the gloom of wanting,

We must focus not on possessions.

We must restore our soul and mind,

We must change our inner self.
