Essence

When all feels alone or dark or despairing

When the words just are not there

But there is something—

Some thing below the surface

Simmering

Slowly

Wanting its flavor released

I wait

I wait for the revealing

For the sound of the voice

For the words that capture that which is

So true

So real

It takes my breath away

Words are not enough

Or so it seems

Until the poet captures the dance

That is going on inside

Around

Above and below

Whirling me deeper

Dipping me down

Until I know

That while words may not seem enough

They uncover what is there

What is universal

What is waiting to be seen

Acknowledged

Savored

Like the morning light dancing through the window

Spilling out onto the walls and floors

Like the music that starts soft and then grows

Burgeoning into a symphony of rhythm and note

Like a landscape

Like a dancer

Like a moment that makes you forget

But remember to breathe

So has poetry been for me
