Eulogy to Summer

By night Summer smells of Standing in the kitchen doorway Propping open the screen door -- Moths sneaking by -- To rustle grass clippings off bare feet, Though they leave scent and stain like sliced chives. By day Summer smells of Driving aimlessly Leaning out the car window at the station Gasoline pungently heavy in the air. In the future, I think, There can be only one - The smell of grass, of green, Or the smell of gasoline. What we do next will determine which.
