Everything Happens For A Reason

If I found myself deserted on an island

sitting under the shade of a palm tree

I would look out at the ocean

And realize it was just me and the sea.

I would sit there knowing that what I had was enough

Even though to some this may appear tough.

“Ludicrous!, insane, is there something wrong with her brain?”

I can imagine them saying

If they found out the one thing I chose to take with me

Is not something that can be held, not something one can see.

I know that most people

Would take a good book

One they could read time after time

Escaping in the words the characters spoke.

However, my mind would begin to wonder

As most wondering minds do

With all of the time in the world

But nothing in the world to do.

Since I am a thinker

The one thing I would need

Is the knowledge that in that moment I am exactly where I am meant to be

I would acquire solace from that indeed.

All I would need is the mere thought

That there is more good in this world than bad

And that happy moments are always to follow

The ones that make us sad.

I would need to know that there was a reason

My friends mother was just diagnosed with cancer for the third time

That from experiencing these seemingly unfair hardships

She has gained the necessary strength with which she will climb.

I would look back on the Sandy Hook shooting that occurred just down the road

The whole world felt the sadness that created a wound that cannot be sewn.

But from this I saw that good always comes out of even the most horrible things

When I first realized that love is more powerful than hate and nearly everything.

To put it simply, all I would need to take with me

Is that everything happens for a reason

That would give me the strength to weather any storm

Even during hurricane season.

With that in mind I could remain sitting peacefully

under the natural, relieving shade of the palm tree

Living a life of contentment

Knowing mine was well spent.
