An Exercise to Tire My Mind

My days are long

And I find my body tired.

With drooping eyelids,

Heavy feet, and yawning,

I climb into bed.

As I lay there with my arm over my face,

I find discomfort where I lay.

Tossing and turning,

I try to make it go away

Just to find that the sensation stays.

Slowly, my brain begins to panic,

"What if I can't sleep? I have a class in the morning,

I have to SLEEP!"

And precious seconds, then minutes, then hours,

Pass me by.

Why is it that my mind is so active?

Active to the point of this insomnia?

How is it that I have yet to collapse from exhaustion?

Here I sit, making it worse.

Screens are known to keep the mind awake

But it was my homework that brought me here.

Tired and ready to collapse in bed,

I instead chose to compose this poem.

With insomnia as bad as I have it,

This here is like an execise to tire my mind.

I feel it slowly working,

But I won't know for sure until I crawl underneath my bedcovers.

I now bid you adieu, dear reader.

Goodnight, sleep tight,

For tonight's my last night to catch up

On that well known phenomena known only as sleep.
