The Exit Sign

No one will tell you why the exit sign is crooked

Maybe it was the storm in '04

you are in the valley

Or the garbage truck collision in '07

Perhaps the vandals that ran in '09 got it

Maybe the sign predates you

Its crookedness occurring when you were just a thought in your parents' minds

A dream constricted by too tight finances and not the right time

Or maybe nature got in the way

And science saved you

Or the sign predates even them

Before they were even aware of the other

Or the life they would share

Maybe it was a supernatural force

Knocking the sign to lean just to the right

The preacher always said

"Where the interstate and highway meet

Is where a demon is sure to be."

Or the easiest solution

Ignore the sign

How it leans slightly to the right

And the crinkle in the corner

As it wanes in your rear view mirror

When you drive away
