Expectations

get straight A’s they say

it is your job to pass

go to school 8 hours a day

have to be the top of the class

school is not hard

why would you get to come home and relax

even though you always go the extra yard

getting a B is considered slack

study hard the pay off great

it is the expectations no doubt

it shouldn't feel like a weight

then why do i feel so burnt out

can't go home to study

practice is right after school

today we ate running boy am i lucky

being on JV is not cool

can't seem too stressed cuz it's just a sport

i doubt i will play friday night

coach says this should be a port

then why does it always feel like a fight

i can’t wait to go home

but wait i can’t I have work

i start my 5 hour shift

constantly picking up others slack

just wanting to sit

while we are way under staffed

i am so tired i just want to collapse

counting down the minutes till my shift ends

anxiety is in my mind running laps

work decides your study time, it all depends

go home to shower and do homework

but at least I will get an A right?

it doesn't feel like there is a single perk

is there even a finish line in sight

it is all so tiring

but I am just a teenager

my life is not hard

these are the mere expectations

well the expectations are stupid

parents work 8 hours,

the same amount of time we are in school

they are allowed to rest the rest of the night

yet I can’t and why not?

i have other expectations to meet in

work

lacrosse

school

teenagers life is just as tiring as a 9 to 5 is to an adult

screw the expectations

I know this is such a generic saying but it's true when I say I feel you. I can't tell you you'll ever surpass their expectations, the higher you go the higher they will raise them. I've lived all my life getting A's and A+'s and in the end these just become standard expectations. I love that you end off with screw the expectations, and you know what, you're right. Screw them. I love your poem. <3
