Experiment Number One
Patient put into room with activity box
given LSD as a test
is asked to draw whenever he feels
he drew a man’s face each time.
20 minutes after first dose
When he first took the drug
traces of it were not seen.
Waiting...waiting...waiting
until a good time past.
“Condition normal...no effect from drug
yet” commented the patient
85 minutes after first dose; 20 minutes after second
After the second dose
the patient began to feel
an effect from the drug.
Slowly transformed his mind
into something he lacked explanation.
Words come out
they scarcely meant a thing.
“I can see you clearly...
so clearly
I’m having a little trouble
controlling this pencil
it wants
to keep
going”
2 hours 30 minutes after first dose
LSD takes form in his
hand
“LSD experiences may wildly enhance artists
creative potential”
LSD is merely the vessel
that moves creativity
out of the brain
to the canvas.
“Everything is changing color.
my hand must follow the bold sweep of the lines”
2 hours 32 Minutes after first dose
The picture was far from
a face then.
The artist took notice of that
he said
“it’s not a very good drawing, is it?
I give up...
I’ll try again”
2 Hours and 35 minutes after first dose
He discarded the other picture
started fiercely on another
the art was done quickly
followed by laughing, startled by something.
“[patients] may also become more fragmented, disorganized.”
2 hours and 45 minutes after first dose
LSD was in full swing
evidenced by
patient who tried to climb
in activity box
“I am...everything is...
changed..
they’re calling...
your face...
interwoven...who is
…”
4 hours and 25 minutes after first dose
LSD continued to control
patient spent two hours,
lying,
waving hands,
running back
And forth
Across the room”
“[the art] reflect[s] psychopathological manifestations
markedly similar to those observed in
schizophrenia”
5 hours and 45 minutes after first dose
Effects were wearing off slightly
patient walked around in confusing circles
drew again.
“I can feel my knees again, I think it’s starting to wear off”
8 hours after first dose
Sat in bunk
said LSD left
still saws faces.
“I have nothing to say about this last drawing, it is bad and uninteresting. I want
to go home now”
