Extended Self-Definition
Look in the mirror,
What do you see?
I see a simple girl looking at me.
An athlete, a nerd,
A goofball, a friend:
Someone who will be there
Until the very end.
But look! Don’t you see?
Underneath that simple face
Is someone who struts to a much different pace.
Whose thoughts are too deep,
Whose words are too weak
Who feels so much more than you ever would think.
The wins and the losses,
They both hit me hard.
So I put up a front,
It covers me like lard.
I often turn to humor
Because that is what I know.
It’s easier to poke fun and put on a show.
But deep down inside,
When I truly do see, the girl in the mirror that is looking at me,
I see her direction:
Her goals and her dreams
As nothing more
Than a distraction of means.
To keep her away from staring too close,
Because in the end,
She is the one scaring herself the most.
