In the Eye of the Presenter

Change.

If I could, I would.

I wish I could, I want to.

Looking at my life I see so many things:

The good, the bad, the happy, the sad.

There are a lot of things I have to live with.

People say if you’re not happy, change things.

If I could, I would.

I wish I could, I want to.

Me, myself and I.

Society tells us what we should look like, how we should act.

I stare into the mirror.

I see what society tells me I should change.

My hair, my nose, my mouth, my body.

I tried changing by starving.

I tried changing by covering who I am in those chemicals called makeup.

I told myself that I could be like the girl in the magazine.

One day I realized it’s not me that needs to change.

Society, itself.

That’s what needs to change.

Ideals of “beauty” are standard.

Thin, tall, blonde, tan, exotic, curvy.

We all see what society tells us is beautiful.

We all believe we need to change ourselves.

We all starve ourselves and cover our faces in makeup.

But nobody looks like that.

Not even the girl we are trying to live up to looks like that.

If I could, I would.

I wish I could, I want to.

For the girls like me, I want to change society.

We are short, dark-haired, stick-shaped, athletic.

We do not look like the girl in the picture.

We never will.

I wish I could change the ideals of beauty.

There is no standard.

We are unique, not the same.

If I could, I would.

I wish I could, I want to.

Change not me.

Not anymore.

Change the girl’s mind, the one skipping another lunch.

Change the girl’s tears into laughter, because she is happy to have red hair.

Change the girl’s lies, about her height, always adding those extra 2 inches.

Change the girl’s eyes, to let her see how beautiful she is in her own way.

Change all the girls that I used to be.

Change their suffering.

Their pain.

Their lack of confidence.

Their grumbling stomachs.

Their tear-streaked faces.

Change who I used to be.

Let them know they are beautiful.

Beauty is within, without, unlimited.

If I could, I would.

I wish I could, I want to.
