Eyes

I remember the colour of her eyes

Staring up with me with more heat than that Summer day.

All the fire,

All the passion,

All the greens and browns and golds.

The entire universe condensed into

Two

Bright

Points.

She is everything.

Do you know what happens when an infinite thing is condensed into a body that small, perfect, fragile, precious, finite?

It is more than anyone should bear.

But there she sat

With eyes that told me to stay,

With eyes that draw me in so close I could never distinguish a part of me from a part of her.

I could never leave.

I wouldn’t ever want to.

I…

Eye.

Eyes with an artificial shine

Months from Summer, in a living room where

Despicable

Real flames burn.

They aren’t the color of her eyes.

The fire is too hot and too loud and real and.

No real flame could burn half as warm or passionate as the fire that once burnt in her eyes

Everything is breaking

Everything is falling into pieces because the universe is leaking

Leaking small drops of hydrogen and oxygen, combined in liquid form and tainted with…

Glucose?

And sodium?

And lysozyme?

And pain from being told lie after lie after lie after lie.

I look at her and see fragments and drops and splitters so small they are indistinguishable from my own.

We still try

We reach with porcelain hands cracked beyond repair

We should be useless

But her arms are around me and somehow

Somehow

We are back together and all the pain and tears become nothing

She holds me so close that I become nothing

And she is everything

I look into her eyes and the fire is gone

But there is a new light

A determination, a hunger, a hope

I think

I think her eyes are the colour of love
