Eyes

I could see the disappointment

Shining through her eyes

Her words slashing at me like a knife

Each word specifically designed to hurt me

She deserved more

Than a daughter like me

The resentment growing inside her

It grew more apparent each day

I was nothing she wanted in a daughter

She had in mind perfection

I am nothing but imperfection

She tries to hide it

The spite she has for me

Behind each smile

Behind each hug behind each gift

Behind each “I love you”

Because each day I grow

Into something she did not have in mind

Nothing hurts me more

Than seeing her avert her eyes

That used to be filled with love

When I walk into the room
