Eyes Forward

I have a rare affliction,

One you can hardly see,

But it did crash around my head

With unexpected glee.

My vision becomes poorer,

With every rising sun.

One day I will be blind,

My malady will have won.

This fate was etched in stone,

Before I could even breathe.

The dice were cast,

Before I knew there was a game.

I was 13 when I got the news,

It gave me such a fright.

I knew not what to do,

How do you cope with such a plight?

I was young,

Untried.

Unsure of who to be,

And faced with a challenge I’d once before seen.

I feared for the future.

I feared for my dreams.

I dared not hope,

Things were better than they seemed.

Somewhere in the panic,

Somewhere in the strife.

A very young lady,

Found her purpose in life.

I found who I was,

I found who I am,

I found a truth about life,

That few understand.

You decide your future,

You decide your fate.

Perception is everything,

Something you get to make.

I chose to be happy,

I chose to move on,

I chose to make a tragedy,

Just one note in the song.

This poem discusses my diagnosis of a rare genetic dissorder that affects my central vision called Stargardt's and my journey to acceptance.
