Eyes of me
The wind
Whips around in my hair
As I look down
To the last view I’ll ever see.
I notice someone at the bottom.
A girl.
Just like me.
Her thick hair tied up in a short stump.
Like a palm tree.
Her dad is swinging her around
As her mom records.
A memory.
She’ll play it at her wedding.
The girl looks up at me.
Everything I did.
Every time I failed.
I got back up
For her.
My perfect grades.
My sleepless nights.
My bucketfuls of tears.
But I still got back up.
For her.
Everything.
Just for her to look at me
With those eyes
That used to stare at me
In the mirror.
The eyes that saw me at my lowest.
Yet she still looked at me
With a kind of love
Only I could know.
One more day.
So she can live to see herself graduate.
Maybe she’ll have kids.
Change the world.
As I blackout
I heard her laugh—
That precious laugh—
One
Last
Time.
