Eyes Like Mine
Oh Ma, you know I love you so
But they're a-sendin' me 'way
Fight for you and Sis, I'll stay low
And they pay for college, so they say.
We're much more strong 'nd smart
I'll only be gone 'till Christmas Day
At least that's what they're a-hopin'.
Oh my doe-eyed boy, you make me so proud,
But you left without a peep, without a sound.
Now I can't hear your voice 'ntil the leaves are dead and gone.
My dull ol' eyes will weep 'nd cry,
'ntil our president brings you home to me.
Oh ma, I don't know if I'll see home snowflakes fall.
Though the ash in the air is like Christmas Day,
The only gift I have is keepin' my life
But my eyes are seein' bodies stackin' high.
Oh how could they keep you, my precious son?
It's only the young they've been holdin'
College should have been on wait
Now you'll be payin' with your blood.
It's clear now, they're not with us
Seems they're there for profit.
I haven't heard from you son in a few long moons,
For your safety I am a-prayin'.
I hope your thoughts are still with me
And not lyin' on that jungle floor.
A knock on the door filled the lonesome room
And momma opened the portal.
His body in one piece, back from 'Nam
But his mind was floating elsewhere.
When her eyes met his, they were framed with tears
And his soul was so much older.
A doe-eyed boy no longer shone
Now his eyes were old as his mother,
