The Eyes to See

“How do I grow?” Asked the rock to the tree.

“I want to have arms, so I can move and be free.”

“Is that what you really see?” asked the tree.

“I am rooted in the ground, all I will ever do is look around.

You can roll to and fro, there’s no telling where you’ll go.

I will grow old and weak, one day you might find yourself on the highest peak.

I must ask you once more, what is it you really seek?”

“I want to grow tall and strong, and when the wind comes make a song.

Would that be so very wrong?”

“Right or wrong is hard to say, but I will tell you a secret if I may?”

“You may”, said the rock, “but you must not delay!”

“I will never be so very free, because all I am is one small tree,

But a rock has its place, like a tree has its space.

You are you, and I am me and we both have necessity.

A rock and a tree both have beauty,

But you must have the eyes to see,

It is only then you will truly be free.”
