My true self is honest, and more often than not

I say things perhaps I shouldn't have thought

My true self is mean, not afraid to insult

And heartbreak and hurt often result

My true self is lost in this big crazy world

My soul pushed,

                   pulled,

                           shoved,

                                   stretched,

                                             twisted

                                                   and twirled

Without filters on heart, mind and soul

I'm bratty, outspoken and out of control

My filters are there to conceal my instincts

To make me real, to make me convincing

We use filters to become something we're not

To hide the troubles with which we're fraught

But to be your true self, where you're your own

Involves more than taking off filters found on a phone

I have goals, I have habits, I have reasons and dreams

Sometimes I even break down at the seams

And unfiltered it can be hard to handle

The fight with myself turned into a battle

Maybe filters are there not to hide who we are

But to turn us into what we wish to become

My true self I am, and my true self believes

We filter, we change, and we achieve
