Fabrication

I sold my identity and it was all just because

I knew what you wanted and wished that I was

I shed off the scraps of self you didn't admire

And cloaked myself in elements of your desire

I studied your tastes, you were more than happy to share

And slowly and surely found some pieces to wear

I created the perfect character and next learned my lines

Took your thoughts and ideals to eagerly parrot as mine

It was exhausting and painful to rip off my true skin

Yet no matter the changes, I never could win

There was always something I hadn't gotten quite right

And all of my valiant efforts you left in spite

Now I'm latent without you telling me who to be

I'm no one, I'm nothing, I've shed all that was me

After working so hard just to become this

I don't know how to be someone you miss
