Facade
Its like walking outside and feeling the heat
You assume its the sun’s rays beating upon your bare skin
But where is the light
You know it should be there, because those around you act as though they see it
So why can’t you
Is it the sun that doesn’t wish to show you its presence,
Or is it that you’re afraid to let it in
Do you fear what might be seen if it illuminates your thoughts
Are you worried about who truly lives within the dark corners of your mind, and what they might have planned
Perhaps you have learned by now how to pass life unnoticed.
Sometimes masks cover more than just the face
When you speak to others, are they your words, or those of an actor who’s recited the lines enough times to improvise upon them
When you embrace a loved one, is it your heart that beats beside theirs, or is it simply a drum following a learned rhythm, never falling off beat, but secretly hoping that the performance has an approaching finale.
When you look within the eyes of another, do you see yourself
Or do you only feel a longing to be behind them
To know what they know
Will you ever get that chance
Or will the drums finally cease,
Will the actor take his bow,
And will the sun stay but a dark lover
Teasing your senses with its warm breath as your eyes close
Never tasting the sweet romance of its kiss as they shut on one darkness and enter another
