The Faces

The Japanese say that we have three faces.

One.

The first we show to the world, to the public, to our peers.

The face we show to everyone for most of our years.

I hate to believe that this isn’t a face at all,

That it’s a mask we wear until we gain the courage to out from underneath it crawl.

The mask you wear could have a smile or could have a frown,

but the feelings underneath are what are pulling you down.

The mask is for cheating, the mask is for lying,

But you wear that fake smile, it shows that you’re trying.

Two.

The second face you wear is a little less popular,

Only for your friends and your family, but you still duck behind your collar.

I hate to believe that the second isn’t a face either,

That it’s a mask we wear to hide our scary features.

This mask you wear because you’re still hiding something,

yet little do you know this mask could be crushing.

The mask is for cheating, the mask is for lying,

But you wear that fake smile, it shows that you’re trying.

Three.

The third you never show to anyone, a true reflection of who you are.

But be careful with this one because it could leave a permanent scar.

I love to believe that the third isn’t a mask, the first one of it’s kind,

That it shows your feelings, and how they’re all intertwined.

This face you keep to yourself because it is probably sad,

and you think if you share it things might go bad.

This face is for reality, this face isn't for lying,

So wear a real smile, it shows that you’re trying.

But let’s face it, people care about you and how you are feeling,

and they use your face to see how you’re dealing.

Don’t wear a mask, don’t hide your face,

You’re one of a kind, you can’t be replaced.

Take off the mask, let your face run free,

because nothing is more amazing than being who you were made to be.
