Fade.

Here I am again Extending a hand. Here I am again Cutting into my heart. And yet again, To no surprise, There is no reply. I have tried Countless lonely nights And numerous dragging days To mend the broken ground That lies between us. And you have For countless solitary nights And numerous empty days Responded With a heartbreaking silence. I’m merely trying to offer you a friend Which is more than I can say for you. Why even keep a presence If you have no intention To give me the time of day? If you are content With this soul piercing silence, This broken state you’ve helped create, Then I can be content To push your bloody tome Into the very back of my mind. I can be content To let it sit on a dusty and molded shelf Along with all the other failed friendships I so desperately tried to save And let it rot- Rot until the ink fades from the pages- Every word spoken or written between us Falling away from memory. Rot until the pages crumble into dust- Each moment we shared in our story together Imploding on itself So that I never have to relive it. Rot until its contents have shriveled up And cast themselves into oblivion So all that’s left Is the husk of us- The covers- Bound together by a spine That will slowly wither Until even the very glue I had made From love and faith and hope, That was supposed to keep us together, Chips away like mortar between the bricks Of an old forgotten house. I can be content To let it decompose there For so long That when you finally decide to open up I’ve all but forgotten The way your name rolls of my tongue, The contours of the face I ached to touch, The melodious voice my heart once danced to, And the feeling of warmth that had fueled me. Forgotten That once upon a time You meant something.
