Fairer Skin

Fairer Skin

I'm no person of the fairer skin
it's sad we are judged by our pigment..
or because of our melanin we are considered "ignorant"

who are "We"?
the people who get one month for the "others" to understand why "we" are free..
I thought Rosa sat, and Martin stood for this to end?
almost half a century ago and it begins again

I'm no person of the fairer skin..
I am judged based off of my complexion
I will never get a good job, because my name sets me up for rejection.

or maybe I am not apart of the "we" that people see..
because I'm lighter than most.
or because my hair is versatile
and doesn't hang all "wild"

the man above blessed the women and men of my kind with fuller lips to speak his word,
higher hair to be closer to his heaven
and wider noses to smell when someone is coming to bring hell.

but my people.. we give them a reason to stereotype us
day to day drug bust
who's new in jail?
just another black kid.. oh well

we are all human,
created the same.
but because our skin is darker,
we're the ones to blame.

I am no part of the fairer skin..
wondering how did this begin.
history repeats itself
so here it is again

the "others" see "we" and they are quick to flee
they judge us off of our weave
and all the things we think we need.

my color doesn't determine my intelligence.
or how I walk into a room with such elegance.
nor does my color determine my ability to act as a lady
as the "others" expect "us" to act up in a non humanlike way..

i don't want to be apart of the fairer skin..
praying our next generation will not have this begin again
"we" will have our own stories to tell
as we stand at the top from which we fell
