Fall
Red leaves blend with orange,
shimmering across the earth.
Fall has arrived,
just as I thought it would.
The world is forever changing,
seasons moving.
Yet, I feel alone,
as if nothing changes.
In the desert,
Heat still strikes
Prickly cacti shed spikes.
Nothing seems to change,
at least not there.
How I long to be in the desert,
where all remains the same.
Here, winter comes,
bringing cold air.
Spring will follow,
too shortly after.
There, cacti will bloom once more,
with the promise of white flowers.
Though the desert won’t see it,
rain will come, endless, wet, and unhappy.
A wish for heat,
a wish for freedom
from this changing world.
A longing to be in a world
where nothing changes.
Nothing at all.
Still, I sit
watching the leaves,
shimmering gold, yellow, red,
knowing the change will come,
and nothing I do can stop it.
