Fall
I fall down
and I’m saved by your hands.
Your eyes meet mine,
communicating new future plans.
We talk and we sing
our favorite love songs.
I’m held captive in your touch.
It is to you I now belong.
I fall in love
with your smile and laugh.
My friends wonder where I am
but their worry will pass.
We stay out late night,
we paint the town red,
for that is your color
I’ll never forget.
I fall asleep
in your arms and into ignorance.
My family doesn’t know me.
They ask, “Who does she think she is?”
We fight through the silence
over freedom and time,
but all you can say is
“You can’t do that, you’re mine.”
You drag me down.
Your push turns to shove.
Their screams run through my mind,
“Wake up, this is not love!”
I want to be safe
and I long to be free,
I stand up for my own sake
Change is coming with the turn of these fall leaves.
I fall through the darkness,
a necessary fate
To rediscover real love
and I fear I’m too late,
But just when I see
the hard concrete approach,
A warm and bright smile
Gives what I need most
I fall into his arms
without worry or fear.
He knows my recent battle
yet he pulls me in near.
I’m reluctant to give him
my heart and my soul,
But he waits patiently,
without push, without pull.
I fall away from doubt
with every dumb joke he cracks.
He converses with my father
about touchdowns and sacs.
My mother tells me
that I’ve found a good one.
In this moment I realize
My search for true love is done.
He tells me I’m incredible
yet he still doesn’t know
How much he means to me
so I whisper to him slow,
“This is the way
that love is meant to be.
You hold me so tight,
though I know I am free.”
He is the reason
I know love exists.
With every big hug
and every long kiss,
He makes me feel worthy
like some sort of prize,
But I know I am the real winner
When I look into his eyes.
I fall in love.
