The Falsification of Individuality

The pearls on her neck hide her scars

The way his tattoos hide his

But even though they live in distinct worlds 

They are parallel to each other in many ways

Both trapped inside bodies too alien

Feeling the need to fit into a world that rejects their existence

She excessively adorns her neck with glistening jewels

And her wrist with blinding diamonds

He furiously places a snarl on his face

And permanent ink on his skin 

But their hearts thump loudly

At the thought of one day being accepted by the ones who disregard them
