Family Formalities

Fighting in my household was a normality

However, the love my parents had for each other was a formality

To protect me, they stayed together as long as they could

Until the day came where the war was over, they both stood

Taking me to different homes, I went between the two

I struggled to know who was who

Am I with Mom or Dad tonight?

Will Dad talk about Mom?

Or will Mom help me with my schoolwork?

Will they ever get back together?

Or will they stay separated forever?

I started to take care of myself

Doing the dishes and cleaning the floors

I did most of the chores

On the days I was with my Mom I played and played

But with the return to my Fathers the sky got darker

And those fun filled days passed away

I really wish I could change those times

After all: I was only five
