Family Tree

Biological Mom; a druggie always under

Just because she gave birth to me

Does that mean she’s my mother?

At night when I cried

Was she the one who made

The bad dreams go bye, bye?

No, but at least she didn’t take advice.

Biological Father; sperm donor’s what I call ‘im.

He was here for a month

But he split, because he had a hunch

That I wasn’t his, I someone else’s

But now I wonder did he give me a kiss goodbye?

Just in case he was the guy?

Nana; the mother that didn’t want to be called grandma

Always there until she wasn’t

Not her fault, it was mine

Always said without me she would die

But I made the choice

That when the police came to lose my voice.

Jasmine Newman; a stranger who to us she came

Who knew she was my sister?

I thought she just changed her name

I loved her I did but I

Hadn’t seen her since I was a kid

Technically a baby, but with a mother

Like mine, my sister? Maybe.

Randa; we always called her pooky of panda

Asia, where she was from

She was always the perfect one

Hard to keep up with her

She was everything from band geek to cheerleader

This was my family to age ten

But after my mother went crazy

And my Nana committed suicide

I was shipped to the first family that would take me in.

Mother #2; rude to me sweet to you

Two faced lady who already had the perfect little daughter

Why with me would she bother?

To ruin her life so she could complain some more

Or better yet to do the chores

Father #2; slave to his wife

But who said when you married that you had a life?

Well, maybe Nobody did

Because he met my new family before I was their kid.

Katherine Preston; my sister to be

She’s only 28 days younger than me

Pretty blonde hair, tiny waist

Beauty is everything in this case

Her love didn’t pass vanities

No wonder she used profanities

Yep, this my family tree

They’re crazy just like me.

This poem is about my family but more importantly it shares some of my life. I lay down before you my split parents, my drug infested home, my struggle with self-image, my transfer to a new family, my pain from every aspect of my life and many other things. My advice to you when you read my poem is to look closer and read between the lines because you can never be sure what you will find.
