Farther to Fall
We cannot be glass
So fragile that we will shatter,
That someone will step on the shards we can’t clean up.
We cannot be a mirror,
So in love with our idea of love,
That one day the mirror will fall, and we will see each other.
We cannot be paper,
So willing to bend to each other,
That will one day be crushed flat– by you or me.
I cannot and will not follow you to the ends of the earth
If I don’t want to go there.
And you can’t make me.
But I will stay and wait, and wait,
And wait until the end of time.
Yes, I promise that I will wait for you, just as you promise that you will come back.
This is where we tread our delicate line,
Not in our butterflies or fairy flushes,
Not in our stolen breath or murmured words,
Not in the warmth of falling spring as it drifts around us in our snapshot of forever.
We must walk our line,
But we cannot be afraid of falling.
Because I promise I will never fall, and you promise you will always catch me.
But why would I go up there with you, when it’s so much farther to fall?
Because I love you, I think.
I love you a lot.
And I think you will catch me.
