Father
To my long lost father,
I wonder if the years have been good to you,
Since the day you chose to leave.
Does regret ever eat at you
Like the emptiness you left in your wake?
A father is meant for love and protection,
Yet all I ever knew of you was
Broken hearts and silent tears.
In case you were wondering,
We survived your departure
Pulled ourselves from the ashes and began again.
Your betrayal made us warriors
Fearless in the face of destruction
Determination surrounding us like a second skin
Success is not a question, but an absolute
Made sweeter in the knowledge
That none of it will be owed to you.
I hope leaving was worth it.
Regards,
The future Dr. who won’t carry your last name.
