Father of the Year
He couldn’t let go of the bottle
Until he was too sick to lift his arm.
He couldn’t keep his word for long.
A broken father,
A cheater,
A liar,
A drinker,
A gambler,
And broke.
He’s bipolar,
Rarely sober,
And thinks life’s a joke.
He’s full of himself
And he fills prostitutes.
Unreliable,
Never shows up,
Too busy getting high as a kite.
But like a siren
He’ll draw you in
With a story tragic
And filled with sin.
Abused by his father,
A dying mother,
And many step others.
He ran off to the army
And found music,
His one true love.
Got married,
Got her pregnant,
Not his wife,
No his lover,
My mother.
Got divorced.
Got married,
Had two kids
And a relapse.
Got divorced.
A construction worker,
A golfer,
A singer in a band.
Plays guitar,
And could quote any movie off hand.
He’ll make you laugh
And he’ll make you cry,
Doesn’t scream,
And you’ll always wonder why…
It still hurts when he talks,
Yeah it cuts like a knife.
His smile is soft but his bite,
Well it bites.
He made many mistakes,
Like his third wife.
When he died she kept his ashes
And held a funeral noone wanted.
He missed every recital,
Award,
And spelling bee.
But then he took me skating,
We went sledding,
And we watched christmas lights.
He made pizza and eggs
With way too much spice.
He danced like a weirdo
And watched every movie at least twice.
He’d burst into song at the drop of a hat.
Loved to embarrass his kids
Like any old dad.
He was never perfect
But “I love you” made it worth it.
