Fear Without You
Mialin Amato
Fear Without You
I don’t want to lose that girl in the photograph but the years keep ticking away
She laughs from her frame teasing my growth as I whisper to her “why won’t your stay?”
The youth in her eyes drips like honey, so sweet and so fragrant and fresh
Her skin porcelain and fragile, but her strength shows nonetheless
I fear my soul will wither and my innocence will fade and the glory of her heart will soon be remade
The heart so pure and clean of any malice
Weighed down by hard times, it creates the perfect balance
It seems there’s no love or no laughter that can compare to that in the photograph
The only love that will be shown in time will be written on my epitaph
Everyday brings new experiences, knowledge to be known
But everyday is also a day closer towards being alone
I’m scared of losing that girl in the photograph because she is unafraid
Me 16 and counting while she had just been laid
Laid down onto the Earth with only a flower growing in her mind
While now that flower has been trampled over thanks to father time
I need that girl to water my soul to grow my soul
I need that girl to hold me up and keep me from the cold
But looking away from the photograph I collide with the mirror
The woman shown reflecting has been living and loving for more than just a few years
She’s vibrant and caring and thoughtful and different
She is a seed now sprouted and a tree most magnificent
Staring back at me is myself and I, I can tell now that they’re the same girl through the dusty brown eyes
I’ve realized in time that while your childhood is precious
It should be seen more as a gift, one that can greatly bless us
Innocence and youth, vitality and life don’t fade or leave
They follow us and develop with us until we grow into trees
The little girl and I are one and the same except one was just a seed and the other now knows her name
