Fearing and Learning
Knowledge is gained by attending classes,
true wisdom from fear of the Lord.
In order to seek wisdom, I must listen;
I must be open to correction and guidance.
In order to learn, I must not ignore advice.
Let wisdom enter my heart;
let knowledge be pleasant to my soul.
Though God may discipline me, I must rejoice;
discipline is out of love.
A fool does not listen to instruction,
he falls to the path of the wicked.
A fool does not learn from his simple ways,
the wise are taught and add to their learning.
Evil deeds lead a man to death,
his folly is from a lack of discipline.
God guards my heart and is my shield,
he protects me from evil.
When I lie down, I will have no fear.
If I trust in the Lord, he will guide me;
if I act independently, I am a fool.
Blessings await the wise;
disaster awaits the foolish.
Wisdom brings wealth, honor, and life;
foolishness brings death.
The wicked cannot sleep,
I have sound judgement and discernment;
my sleep is sweet.
Let me be a tree of life to those around me,
let me show kindness to all of my neighbors.
Do not let evil slip from my tongue,
do not let a foul phrase leave my mouth.
The world I live in is fallen;
evil lurks in all corners.
I must guard my heart,
it is the wellspring of life.
I must focus on what is before me;
I must keep my path straight.
When I fall into sin, I must humble myself;
I must seek forgiveness to gain freedom.
The Lord hates evil, especially adultery;
in order to love God, I must also hate evil.
God loves those who love him;
he blesses those who seek wisdom.
Wisdom was there in the beginning;
it is seen in creation all around.
I must seek wisdom in creation;
I must engage with wisdom day to day.
I listen to the instruction of wisdom;
I seek wisdom and favor from the Lord.
Like a sheep follows its shepherd,
I will follow God.
Like a gazelle fears the hunter,
I will fear the Lord.
True wisdom comes from fear of the Lord,
he gives true knowledge and understanding.
