A Few More Words

People don't seem to understand
the real cost of drugs and drinks.
They say its easy to escape, but
these things control how people think.

They think it's really no big deal,
and that the high life's just for fun.
But the longer addiction has its hold,
the more it controls someone.

It's no disease.
It's an abyss.
An ocean of endless depth.
Swim too far down,
you just might drown,
but its too deep,
too dark
to see this

Too blind to see the light shine,
and the cost kept getting bigger.
Addiction took your life before
he ever pulled that trigger.

I've missed you for so long.
I, too, have felt inundate.
I just wish you would've seen that
before it was too late.

I saw you on that table, Dad.
That was the hardest
of many things.
With still so much to say to you,
tears to my eyes
it still brings.

Nostalgic recall is exactly right,
looking back at what once was.
Our pictures make me smile bright.
I love them all because

A picture's worth a thousand words,
and sixteen plus years later,
I find myself as you once did,
seeking words out
much, much greater.

Now that you have left the earth,
you're watching over me with Jesus.
My heart is broken.
It's a process,
but i'm picking up the pieces.

July 4th was always my favorite,
but that's the day you left.
To lose a life at fourty-six,
is truly such a theft.

But it's okay,
because that's the day
that you were finally free.
And you're still here,
though I can't see you,
Everyone says they
see you in me.

I'm eighteen now.
Much taller than
eye-level with your knee.
But nonetheless,
no matter my age,
your baby I will be.
