In the fields of my heart

In the fields of my heart, I sat washing my hands over your soft, black fur once more. Yet I was still careful, as if the slightest movement would hurt you. Shatter you even. Your head lay on my lap, taking your worrying deep sighs; I try to match them. “My boy,” I whispered, smiling softly. “My sweet, beautiful, radiant boy.” Tears crept from my weary eyes, tracing my flushed cheeks; caressing each freckle. This wasn’t real. But in spite of that, I wanted it to last forever. Dreams of him have waited to haunt, to flood my mind. The grass lay soft as our hearts beat slowly. You looked so, so tired. “I’m sorry, my love,” I sighed. I leaned down and kissed his beautiful head. He blinked slowly and closed his doe eyes one last time. To lay to rest. My baby. My sweet, sweet baby boy. This is my goodbye to you. I hope to meet you soon, my baby. I have loved you more than anything in this life, and it will carry on through my death.
