Fill it

This world is a buffet

All you can eat selection of mistakes

Steamy sexual immorality and jumbo-sized jealousy

Can be shoveled onto your plate

Right next to entrees of detectable deception and hot-n-ready hate

No reason to stop

No reason to raise up a hand shouting wait

Because we all suffer the same fate

A gaping hole in our gut

Shrilly screaming

“Fill me, fill me!”

The only choice we can frantically see

Is to feed, feed, feed

With every object, action or person obtained easily

But here’s the funny thing

The second it seems we’re bursting at the seams

We realize

We’re still empty

So we continue to consume

At some point convicted with sickness

We wretch and purge

Determined to cease we turn

Away from the buffet

And stay curled in on ourselves

In a corner’s isolation

But our stomach remains an abyss

Our minds still haunted by every collision of fist

Unfulfilling kiss

That failed to satisfy

So we cry

Tears role down faces

Down necks and collarbones

Ribcages and finally into the abdominal

The vacancy’s home

Our fingertips gingerly trace the outline of emptiness

Again and again

Around and around

Wondering what kind of love could possibly fit

Then the answer clicks

Like the moment you discovered the square block fit in the square hole when you were six

But even a master’s degree in geometry couldn’t reveal this

The truth unfolds

Within every one of us is a God shaped hole
