The Final Voyage of the USS Indianapolis
Gliding quickly through the sea,
What, oh what, could it be?
It’s the USS Indianapolis of the Admirality,
On a secret mission, you see.
Her propellors are quickly turning round and around,
And the guns and men are prepared to go a round.
They carry a special Boy,
Unbeknownst of the Navy’s ploy.
They sail vulnerable and alone,
Whilst the sun and moon shone.
The Boy safely delivered, and the men unburned.
The USS Indy was ordered to return.
They sail alone; unbeknownst of their doom.
They sail without the knowledge held back by the Navy’s loom.
An unfortunate thing lay in the depths,
An enemy sub that’ll lead them to their deaths.
If the Navy’d warned them of the danger,
They’d have saved the ship that delivered the World War changer.
From the bowels of the ship came the boom,
Two torpedoes that sent her to her doom.
Two explosions broke the great ship,
And into the depths her bow did slip.
The pride and start of the Admiral’s fleet,
Made her men lose more than their feet.
Her beautiful form now torn,
Left her men forlorn.
One last time she wept,
And the memories she kept;
As she went to the depths,
Responsible for many of her mens’ deaths.
If only she knew the fate of her men that she left behind,
The trials and tribulations of the most graphic kind.
Her final tears as she sank,
Are why the men must thank.
Her tears were seen from above,
As the last remnants of the ship that they love.
So there she sits on her watery bed.
She may be gone, but her memory is all but dead.
The ship keeps her fallen men by her side,
And she has held many when they died.
The memory of her final will end, never;
For the fame of the great ship shall last forever.
