The Finality of Last Words

Everybody has their own

last words, and a lot,

lately I begin to wonder

what words will be my last.

Maybe a sarcastic comment

to a killer with a knife,

"What are you going to do, stab me?"

as he does just that.

Maybe a final apology

to the man driving the car,

"I'm sorry for walking in front of you."

as I bleed out on the street.

Maybe a declaration of love

to someone I've longed to kiss

"I love you. I don't wanna die."

as the world fades to nothing around me.

Maybe a written note, sitting on my desk

to everybody who expected more from me

"I couldn't stay here. It hurts too much."

as I swallowed countless pills.

Or maybe, hopefully, I'll say nothing at all.

I'll have no last words to share

and nothing left to resolve,

just a last breath and a smile.
